Both are beloved doodle breeds, but they have meaningful differences in temperament, size, and grooming needs. We break it all down.
Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles are two of the most popular hybrid breeds in the UK and Ireland — and for good reason. Both combine the low-shedding intelligence of the Poodle with a beloved family breed. But they're not interchangeable, and choosing the right one for your household matters.
Goldendoodles cross the Golden Retriever with a Poodle, resulting in a dog that's outgoing, eager to please, and highly trainable. They're fantastic with children, get along well with other pets, and adapt easily to most living situations. Their energy level is high — they love fetch, hiking, and swimming. Expect at least an hour of active exercise per day. Coat-wise, Goldendoodles can range from wavy to curly and typically require grooming every 6–8 weeks.
Bernedoodles combine the Poodle with the Bernese Mountain Dog — a breed known for its calm, gentle, loyal personality. Bernedoodles tend to be slightly more laid-back than Goldendoodles, though they still need regular exercise. Their signature tri-color markings (black, white, and rust) are visually stunning. They can sometimes be stubborn — a trait inherited from the Berner side — so early training is important. They're deeply devoted to their families and can be more reserved with strangers initially.
Both breeds come in Standard, Mini, and Micro/Toy sizes depending on the Poodle parent used. Standard Goldendoodles typically weigh 50–90 lbs; Standard Bernedoodles often reach 70–90 lbs. Mini and Micro versions of both can weigh as little as 10–25 lbs. Goldendoodles generally live 10–15 years. Bernedoodles benefit from hybrid vigor and often live 12–18 years, particularly the mini versions.
Choose a Goldendoodle if: you want a highly social, trainable dog with lots of energy and you have an active lifestyle. Choose a Bernedoodle if: you want a calmer, deeply loyal dog with a striking appearance and you don't mind the occasional stubborn streak. Either way, both breeds make extraordinary family companions.
