5 Puppy Training Mistakes Even Experienced Owners Make

Puppy training looks simple — until you're three weeks in and your pup is still jumping on guests, ignoring recalls, and turning every walk into a tug-of-war. Even experienced dog owners repeat the same mistakes. Here's what to watch out for.

1. Training Sessions That Are Too Long

A puppy's attention span maxes out at about 3–5 minutes. Long sessions don't build better dogs — they build frustrated, checked-out puppies. Aim for 3–5 minute sessions, 3–4 times per day. Always end before your puppy loses interest, ideally on a successful repetition.

2. Inconsistent Rules

If jumping up is sometimes cute and sometimes scolded, your puppy can't learn. Every person in the household must enforce the same rules every time. Write them down if needed. Inconsistency is the #1 reason training 'doesn't stick.'

3. Repeating Cues Multiple Times

"Sit. Sit. Sit. SIT." Sound familiar? When you repeat a cue, you teach your dog that the first word means nothing. Say the cue once, wait, prompt or lure if needed, then reward. If your dog doesn't respond, you need to go back a step in training — not say the word louder.

4. Punishing Accidents After the Fact

Rubbing a dog's nose in a potty accident or scolding them when you find a mess does nothing constructive. Dogs live in the present — they cannot connect your anger to something that happened 30 seconds ago. Clean it up, note the pattern, and prevent it next time with better management (more frequent trips outside, closer supervision).

5. Skipping Socialization During the Critical Window

The socialization window closes around 12–16 weeks. This is your one chance to expose your puppy to the full spectrum of human experiences — different people, sounds, surfaces, and animals — in a positive, controlled way. Puppies who miss this window are far more likely to develop fear and anxiety as adults. Talk to your vet about safe socialization options before your puppy is fully vaccinated.
