Every puppy parent goes in with good intentions and a Pinterest board full of training tips. Then week one hits. Here's the honest, unfiltered truth about life with a new puppy — the hard parts and the magical ones.

1. The first night is rough

Your puppy is alone for the first time in their life without their littermates. They may cry, whine, or howl. This is normal and not a sign you made a mistake. Many trainers recommend placing a soft worn T-shirt or blanket in the crate to provide a familiar, comforting scent.

2. They will put everything in their mouth

Shoes, remote controls, chair legs, your hands — all fair game. Puppy-proof your home before they arrive. Keep expensive items out of reach, use bitter spray on cords, and always have appropriate chew toys available.

3. The 'witching hour' is real

Most puppies have a period in the evening — often between 6–8 PM — where they go absolutely feral. Zoomies, biting, ignoring every command they knew ten minutes ago. This is overtiredness. Crate them for a nap. This phase passes.
