A practical Irish checklist covering adverts, microchips, seller records, home preparation, veterinary care and the first week.
A first puppy changes routines, finances and travel for many years. Irish buyers should prepare the home while separately verifying the advert, seller and dog. Excitement is not evidence, and equipment does not make an unsafe transaction safe.
Government guidance says dog adverts must carry the dog's microchip code, age and country of origin plus relevant seller or establishment information. Save the advert and verify identifiers instead of relying on a profile badge.
Meet the puppy at the breeder's property with its mother. Ask about feeding, handling, socialisation and health. Do not let a delivery offer or a request for an immediate deposit remove this step.
Obtain the microchip certificate, veterinary and vaccination records, treatment history, parent health evidence and written agreement. Arrange an independent veterinary appointment and confirm how ownership details will be updated.
Create a safe sleeping area, secure hazards and agree household rules before arrival. Keep the first days calm, maintain the familiar food initially and ask your vet about vaccination-safe socialisation.
Identify a veterinary practice, reward-based trainer, emergency clinic, groomer if relevant, and suitable care for work or travel. Lifetime support matters more than the initial purchase process.
Book your own veterinary appointment and take the original vaccination, treatment and microchip records. Ask which doses remain outstanding and when outdoor walks are suitable. Prepare a quiet sleeping space, continue the agreed food initially and introduce changes gradually with advice if the puppy is unwell.
Plan toilet breaks, supervised child interactions, training and short periods alone around the household's real working hours. Have a backup carer and emergency veterinary contact. Irish buyer checks and lifelong care serve different purposes: completing the paperwork does not complete the preparation.
