About the French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are compact companion dogs known for their bat-like ears. Assess temperament and breathing health individually, and plan for heat safety and continuing veterinary care.

Temperament and household suitability

French Bulldogs are companion dogs that often enjoy close contact and play. They still need reward-based training, gradual alone-time practice and supervised child-dog interactions. Their compact size may suit a smaller home, but stairs, heat, travel and access to veterinary care matter more than floor area alone.

Size, lifespan and practical care

Adult French Bulldogs are small but sturdy; parent size and body condition are more useful than a puppy's appearance for planning. PDSA describes a lifespan of over ten years, but individual health varies. Plan for weight management, regular checks, wrinkle and ear care, nail trimming and dental care rather than treating low coat maintenance as low overall care.

Exercise and heat safety

Use short, comfortable walks and play suited to the individual dog. Flat-faced dogs can struggle with breathing and cooling, so avoid exercising in heat and do not normalise noisy breathing, exercise intolerance or distress. Ask your vet about safe activity and seek prompt advice when breathing changes.

Health questions before choosing a litter

Discuss brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), breathing grades and relevant eye and other clinical screening. The Respiratory Function Grading Scheme assesses adult breathing function; it is not a guarantee that an offspring will never develop BOAS. Request the named parents' actual results and have your vet interpret them. Avoid selecting primarily for exaggerated features or unusual colour.

General care information, not an individual veterinary assessment. Ask your own vet to interpret health records.
