Key Traits
Variety, scent interest and household fit
Confirm standard or miniature size and smooth, long or wire coat. Dachshunds can be alert, vocal and interested in scent, so plan training, recall practice and supervised play. Children need to learn respectful handling; the breed name does not establish an individual dog's tolerance.
Spinal health and ongoing care
Discuss intervertebral disc disease, body condition, handling and suitable exercise with your vet. A normal puppy examination cannot rule out future spinal problems. Request family history and screening appropriate to the actual variety, and seek prompt advice for pain or changes in movement.
General care information, not an individual veterinary assessment. Ask your own vet to interpret health records.
