Use these questions to check breeder identity, the litter, parent health tests, records, socialisation and purchase terms before arranging a visit.

The first conversation with a breeder should help both sides decide whether a visit makes sense. Ask open questions, write down the answers and compare them with the advert and records. A careful breeder is likely to ask detailed questions about your household too.

Who bred the puppy and where?

Ask whether the advertiser bred the litter, where the puppies were born and raised, and whether you will meet the mother there. Ask for the seller's full name and any licence or registration that applies. Verify official numbers independently.

What are the parents like?

Ask about each parent's age, temperament, health history and relationship to the litter. Find out which breed-specific health screens were completed, what the results mean and whether you can see the original evidence before visiting.

How have the puppies been raised?

Ask about everyday handling, household sounds, people, other animals, feeding and time away from the litter. Avoid sellers who use “socialised” as a label but cannot describe what the puppies have experienced.

What records and terms are supplied?

Request a list of the records included at collection: microchip documentation, veterinary and vaccination records, treatment history, parent test results and the written contract. Ask what happens if your vet identifies a problem and whether the breeder has a return policy.

Can I take time to decide?

Ask whether you can visit more than once and review the documents before paying. Pressure to reserve immediately or accept delivery without a proper visit is a strong reason to step back. The purpose of the call is to decide whether the seller deserves further verification, not to secure a puppy at any cost.
